- Jordan Pickford has been questioned over his future as England’s first-choice goalkeeper.
- The goalkeeper plays for a mid-tier club like Everton.
- The player has been the number one goalkeeper for the Three Lions for many years, since the era of Gareth Southgate.

Jordan Pickford ‘s position as England’s first-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2024 has been widely seen as unsuitable for the starting line-up. With many questioning why Gareth Southgate did not choose a premier league side ranked higher than Everton as his first choice.
Pickford, 30, is playing for England at a major tournament for the fourth time. Levelling the record set by Three Lions great David Seaman. With Peter Shilton the only English goalkeeper in history to have played in five major tournaments.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool goalkeeper David James believes Pickford is one of the best goalkeepers at this year’s Euros and is better than Paris Saint-Germain ‘s Italian national team goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“I love Jordan playing for England,” James said. “What’s interesting is the success he’s had, getting to finals and semi-finals of major tournaments and keeping that position for so long.”
“Part of it is because Aaron Ramsdale hasn’t played at ยูฟ่าเบท https://ufabet999.app club level, Dean Henderson hasn’t played regularly because of injury, Sam Johnston has had physical issues and Nick Pope has also been injured before.”
“At least this season he doesn’t have the challenges he might have to face. But he had a very good season with Everton, with clean sheets. If you ask me if he is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. I think he has to be one of them. Because I’m trying to find someone better than him. This Euro, of course there might be, but I think he is better than Donnarumma, for sure.”
“ Manuel Neuer has been out injured for a while now. They have a slightly different style of goalkeeping. Pickford has better feet than Neuer. I feel comfortable with Jordan as England’s goalkeeper.”
Despite having won 64 caps for England, Pickford only made six appearances for European clubs in the Europa League during his first season at Everton in 2017-18, somewhat surprisingly.
Meanwhile, Pickford guided Everton to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Despite the Toffees having their points deducted, and James was surprised the 30-year-old has not played for a bigger club.
“When you look at him playing for England, he’s a different player to the one he played for Everton in many ways. With all due respect to Everton. There are a lot of teams in England that are better than them,” James said.
“So if you have an English goalkeeper who is playing very well for his country. I wonder why he doesn’t play for a better club in the Premier League or a team that suits his talent and his qualities,” the former Liverpool goalkeeper concluded.
